Pick this questionnaire if you've been blogging for a while, have a decent sized group of followers and people commenting on your posts, and get a decent amount of traffic. Basically, you have some experience blogging and you've seen positive results for your efforts. You can define "decent" however you'd like.

1) When did you start your blog?

We started in the summer of 2009. Mom wanted us to have a summer project and she won't let us quit! Just kidding. She did have us start but we're happy and going strong.

2) Do you ever still feel like a newbie?

All the time because we see so many fantastic bloggers doing such amazing things. There is always more to learn.

3) What has been the biggest challenge you’ve faced so far?

Mostly just being organized and finding time to do everything we want to do.

Did you make any mistakes new bloggers can learn from?

We were very intense over everything and felt like we had to post every day. But it's much better to post something that's interesting and relevant rather than just getting something up. People - especially book bloggers - can spot crappy content a mile away.

4) What did you find most discouraging about being a new blogger?

Wondering when, oh when, people would start to comment and interact with us!

How did you deal with this?

It's the simplest thing in the world. You just start interacting with other bloggers, commenting yourself, and suddenly there they are. Okay not suddenly. It takes time but reaching out to others is a whole lot of fun and what will bring others to visit you. But you have to be genuine. If you just leave something like "Love your blog. Come visit mine!" it won't work. Be thoughtful, interested, and engage in a personal way.

5) What do you find most encouraging?

The love and generosity of other book bloggers. They would answer any question we had or send us in the right direction. Everyone was awesome!

6) If you could go back in time and speak with your newbie self, what five bits of wisdom would you tell yourself?

Relax, calm down, be patient and put out quality over quantity. And don't be afraid to reach out to anyone, even if they're "big." It can be intimidating but 99.9999% of the time you'll meet a fantastic, down to earth person who'd love to help you out!

7) What do you like best about the blogs you read?

Humor. When posts are funny, make us laugh out loud, and full of energy, we're in love!

Have you tried to replicate this in your blog?

Of course, but we never think we're as funny as our favorite humorous bloggers. Although Jake's pretty funny. Weird, wacky and original. Also annoying. Very annoying.

8) What do you dislike about blogs you’ve seen?

We steer clear of blogs with lots of whining and complaining. Anyone can have a rant now and then but when it's a regular thing, we say good-bye. And anything negative about authors or bloggers, especially on a personal level.

Do you try to avoid this?

Absolutely. We see no use for that sort of thing. Our dad always said, "You're here to help push people up the ladder of life, not drag them down." We focus on being positive. And wish we were funnier.

9) How did you bring your blog to the attention of so many people?

Mostly commenting and communicating with other bloggers. Contests are always a good way to get buzz but they can be expensive and not everyone can afford to do that. Then there's Goodreads and Twitter. Social media is a great tool. Getting out and connecting with others works every time! And honestly (this was something we've learned) it's more important to have the fewer number of loyal people that keep coming back day after day, rather than the big numbers of people that may sign up to follow but you never hear from again. It's the regular interaction with your favorite folks that make all this work worthwhile!

10) When and how did you get your first ARC (or first few ARCs)?

When we started blogging we had no idea what ARCs were or that they even existed. We happened to comment on a blog that was run by a bookstore owner. She had a bunch of books that she offered to send us because she couldn't get to read and review them. In that batch were ARCs and we were amazed. We had a book that the public didn't have access to yet? Wow. We felt like super spies!

Best Holiday-Break Movie Picks

With only a few days left on the holiday break (and if you decide to take a pause from catching up on your reading) we thought we'd give you a list of the movies you don't want to miss before school and/or work rear their ugly heads!

BEST OVERALL AWESOME

(it's a tie!)

WARHORSE packs an emotional punch. We laughed, cried (tears of joy and sorrow), sighed, held our breath, cringed, had to close our eyes, cheered - you name it. Bring plenty of tissue and be prepared to be emotionally drained by the end. FYI: we think it's way too intense for younger children. We could barely handle it!

SHERLOCK HOLMES, GAME OF SHADOWS took everything we loved about the first movie and added more! More action, more drama, more humor, more Holmes/Watson interaction, more great characters (Sherlock has a brother - the magnificent Stephen Fry), and an awesome ending!

BEST ACTION

MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: GHOST PROTOCOL wasn't even on our "must see" list so we were surprised at how much we enjoyed it. Thrills, super stunts, humor, excitement, drama. Action junkies can't go wrong!

BEST THRILLER

Not for the faint of heart, but if you love suspense thrillers (and the book) GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO is a terrific edge-of-your-seat ride. Just don't expect Daniel Craig to be James Bond-esque. It's Lisbeth (Rooney Mara) that wears the kick-butt pants in this duo.

BEST FAMILY

THE ADVENTURES OF TINTIN captivates the whole clan!

MOST UNIQUE

HUGO was not quite what we were expecting but definitely interesting, unique and has a great message. But be prepared, Jude Law is barely in it at all, despite what you might think from the marketing campaign.

We're lucky to have the author of THE GIRL IS MURDER, Kathryn Miller Haines, joining us today to share a Blast Into Her Past with her favorite books from age 5, 11, 15 and 20.

At age five I was all about Dr. Seuss. The first book I learned to read, frankly because I memorized it after forcing my mom to read it to me so many times, was Green Eggs and Ham. Seuss’s whimsical drawings and catchy rhymes just hit a sweet spot in my little brain. Boy was I amazed to find out later on that he was a political cartoonist during World War II.

When I was eleven, I had two things I loved: books about dancers and mysteries. I read Just Like Jenny by Sandy Asher a thousand times (two best friends into ballet, one is better than the other) and bought every book Lois Duncan had out at the time. Probably my favorite book from this period, though, doesn’t fit into either category: it was Katherine Patterson’s Bridge to Terabithia. To this day that book makes me cry.

When I was fifteen, I started becoming obsessed with the lurid. I still liked mysteries, but I wanted more adult reads like V.C. Andrews’ smut-filled family sagas. Ditto Sidney Sheldon, and Stephen King. My older sister was into these as well, so my copies came from her. They were fat mass market paperbacks that smelled like her coconut scented sun-tan lotion. My favorite book from back then was probably Stephen King’s It. It was just such a huge, ambitious book and the notion of a monster that tapped into everyone’s worst fears and made them reality was terrifying to me.

By the time I was twenty my taste in books had greatly improved. Since I was an English in major in college I was reading a lot of historic lit (I was in an 18th century novel survey class that demanded I read a 400 page novel a week). I didn’t do a lot of reading for fun – everything seemed to be for school then. But my eyes were opened to a lot of fiction I’d never been exposed to.

In addition to the top sellers for 1787, I took a Jewish lit class and read my first graphic novel (Maus) and discovered wonderful writers like Philip Roth, Bernard Malamud, and Franz Kafka. I think the big important book for me though was Truman Capote’s In Cold Blood. Billed as the first non-fiction novel, I read the true crime book for “fun” that summer and was absolutely blown away. I think that’s when I really knew I wanted to be a crime writer.

A bit of noir is a refreshing change. The world of the 1940's was engaging, with Iris, our spunky teen trying to fit in at a new school and solve a who-dun-it. She's just moved from the expensive section of town to New York's lower socio-economic spectrum.

The time-frame is different, but many will be able to relate to Iris. She doesn't always make the best choices, but her heart is in the right place, which counts for something. And her flaws make her human.

Iris lies and manipulates. Not a smart decision but her actions are geared toward helping others and finding out what happened to the missing boy who happens to be from her new school. She's helping her down-on-his-luck detective father find out the truth behind his disappearance. Time to get sleuthing!

The writing was well done and the plot flowed smoothly. We are allowed to watch Iris make her mistakes and, thankfully, learn from them which provides character development.

The reveal of the mystery in the end while making sense, was a bit of a let down. After all the build-up, it didn't quite live up to the drama, but it was realistic.

The historical aspects of THE GIRL IS MURDER are unique. I haven't read much in this time period. I liked the slang and seeing life in the 40s. The overall flavor of that decade was pleasantly different, and the plot kept a steady pace.

THIS GIRL IS MURDER is a fun, quick read. The characters and the journey to uncover the mystery are engaging. I think historical lovers will find it a treat. It captured the feeling of the era and gave an original perspective in the YA mystery genre.

Movie Review: Breaking Dawn

We took the plunge and saw Breaking Dawn (part 1) this weekend. They kept it true to the book which is good in that it's authentic to the story, but bad in that this was our least favorite book in the series.

The Good:

Kristen Stewart hardly ever gasped
Kristen Stewart hardly ever stuttered
In general, Stewart's acting is improved
Charlie - every scene he's in is a treat. Loved his wedding speech.
Jessica's wedding speech.
Bella looked absolutely horrible, which made her transformation at the end very dramatic.
Edward "in shock"
Bella trying to seduce Edward - very funny
Alice is always adorable
The very good supporting cast
Jacob with his shirt off
Fighting scenes
Always enjoy Edward

The Not So Good

It was slow. Lots of lingering looks and not much happening. They should not have made this into two movies.
The mental, or psychic, chat between the wolves.
Bella and Jacob during their moment at the wedding. It just seemed awkward.
Lack of uber hot chemistry between Edward and Bella
Jacob only had his shirt off once

The Creepy

The imprinting. Sorry, it's still weird.

We went in with an open mind and didn't hate it, but it wasn't fantastic. Part of that is due to us not being crazy about the book and part is the splitting it up into two films. There just isn't enough going on to make it exciting.

The theater had a lot of people commenting throughout, and laughing in moments where it was not intended to be funny.

Several guys were part of a couple and clearly attending just for their girlfriends. During the imprinting scene, one guy behind us said, "Wait. So he's a pedophile now?"

It's movie trailer week! Kind of. It just so happens that we did a post a couple of days ago about the battling Snow White movies - SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN and MIRROR, MIRROR - and the MIRROR, MIRROR trailer wasn't available. But it is now!

It actually looks fantastic. Weird, beautiful, and hysterical! Julia Roberts is amazing!

And, fun fact...Both Alex Pettyfer and James McAvoy tried out for the part of Prince Charming, but Armie Hammer (he played the twins in THE SOCIAL NETWORK) beat them out!

We're big fans of both of them - they are two of the recurring Prince Charmings in Alyssa's dreams - and would have been happy with either. But Armie it is, and hopefully MIRROR, MIRROR will be as good as it looks! Release is March 2012.

The Battle of the Two Snow Whites - at the Movies!

Here is the amazing trailer for SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN!

Love Chris Hemsworth and Charlize Theron. We'll have to wait and see how Kristen Stewart does. It does look epic, and has a fun twist with Snow White teaming up with the hunky Hunstman to vanquish the evil queen. But we do find it interesting that in the trailer, Theron and Hemsworth get to speak while we only see Ms. Stewart - she doesn't say a word.

Release is supposed to be June 1. We hope it's as awesome as it looks!

The other Snow White movie, MIRROR, MIRROR, starring Lily Collins as Snow, Julia Roberts as the Queen and Armie Hammer as the Prince comes out in March but doesn't look as epic. It's more visually artsy and geared to family audiences.

So epic fight drama or artsy, family fun, which are you most looking forward to?

Author Interview & Giveaway: Mary Lindsey - SHATTERED SOULS

We met Mary before she was a best-selling author, so we are thrilled for her success and honored that she is visiting here today. Now read on for the awesome that is Mary!

1) If you were Lenzi's mom and knew about her power to talk to and help lost souls, how would you handle it and what advice would you give her?

Being a mother of teens, this is a hard question because I want what is best for them and I have a strong desire to keep them safe. What would I do? I’d do whatever It takes to facilitate her success as a Speaker. It’s a calling much higher than school or homework, right? My advice would be what my dad told me my entire life before he died: “There is nothing you cannot do if you really want it. Just be sure you want something worth doing.”

2) What's your favorite line and/or scene from SHATTERED SOULS? One of my favorite lines: “Should I shake his hand or kiss him goodnight on the cheek? Maybe I should just act like Spook and lick his face.” (Spook is Alden’s dog.)

My favorite scene is the one in which they soul-share for the first time. Although it is very different now, it was the first scene I wrote.

3) If you had Lenzi's power, what "lost soul" (real historical figure, or fictional character) would you want to help?

Edgar Allan Poe. My current project is based on his poem, “Annabel Lee,” and has entailed a lot of research including several biographies on Poe’s life. He would be the perfect candidate for an intercession.

4) Forbidden romance is a key element in Shattered Souls. Who are your favorite forbidden romance literary couples? Romeo and Juliet, Catherine and Heathcliff from Wuthering Heights, and my all-time favorite forbidden romance couple, Meghann and Father Ralph de Bricassart from The Thornbirds.

5) You're trapped and alone in your river house on the island when the zombie apocalypse hits. The monsters emerge from the water and surround the house. You desperately search for a weapon but find only a Pillsbury dough container with a Post-It note that says "Open me if you want to live!" Screaming in terror, you bravely slam it on the corner of the table. POP! Materializing from a doughy purple mist are Mark Twain and Edgar Allan Poe who explain that instead of fighting to a bloody death, you can vaporize the zombies and save the world by collaborating on a YA novel. What is the title and tag line for the book you three come up with?

Book Review: FOUNDER by L.M. Long +Giveaway

The first few chapters are completely confusing but in a good way. It's like those movies where you see snippets of what's happening to different characters, and it all seems totally unrelated but you know it's all going to jell together somehow. And it does.

I hadn't a clue where this was going and it was such a fascinating reveal when I finally got it. If you've read some reviews that explain the premise, you'll know what I'm talking about, but for those who haven't I won't spoil it. Suffice it to say it melds the world's wartime past into the present.

It's written from two points of view - Marta, a teen girl in a remote Amazon village, and Lara, a young American woman who ends up traveling to the village with her family. Two gutsy, smart, admirable heroines who speak from extremely different perspectives and cultural backgrounds.

FOUNDER's solid cast of secondary characters easily grow on you, but be prepared for some heart-breaking loss along the way. There's no language or sex but you will find violence and mankind's horrifying behavior, along with some uplifting testimony to the beauty of the human spirit.

I know I'm not giving you much specifics to go on, but I don't want to spoil the discovery of the main plot line. There's no paranormal aspect, just an intense, intriguing grab-bag of history, mystery, danger, revolution, psychological manipulation, and flat out Coo-Coo-for-Cocoa-Puffs crazies.

An engaging, thought-provoking adventure, and considering that it's loosely based on true events, at times a downright chilling tale.

Author Interview: Stasia Ward Kehoe - AUDITION

We love author interviews and today is no exception! Please welcome Stasia Ward Kehoe, author of AUDITION! Stasia has an extensive background in dance which is why she has the chops for this dance-themed drama!

1) Sara has to make a some serious life choices in AUDITION. As a mom, what advice would you give her?

As I hear from folks who have read the arc of Audition, I've discovered that it resonates with moms whose kids who are very committed to an art or sport. They are proud and want to be supportive, but often they are unfamiliar with the level of commitment and the world into which their child has entered. Sometimes, the parent doesn't know how to advise the kid. That was something I was trying to get across in the Audition. I also think a tough thing about Sara is that she is afraid to admit her worries--to be open to conversation. As a mom of four myself, I know that it is difficult to give advice to someone who hasn't asked for it. I have one son who is a pretty serious actor--he's done tons of plays and auditioned for movies and all that--and I always want to make sure that he is the one in the "driver's seat" of this dream and not me. I also want him to be safe. I think my advice would really be more for the mom than for Sara and that would be to visit more often and know the people who are spending time with your daughter.

2) What is your favorite line or scene in AUDITION?

I think the most powerful line is when Rem tells Sara that the dance he choreographed with her is not her dance. In terms of enjoyment, I loved writing about specific dance moves and pieces of choreography.

3) Having the male love interest be several years older than the teen female protagonist is somewhat unusual in contemporary YA. How did you come to that decision?

I wanted to write a realistic story and I thought that a teenage choreography prodigy felt a little bit unbelievable. Honestly, though, older love interests aren't particularly novel in fiction. Consider Lydia Bennett & Mr. Wyckham in Pride & Prejudice, or a certain rather senior vampire who romances a dark-haired high school girl on page and screen! Twilight wouldn't work if Edward were an ordinary teen-aged teen. Neither would Audition work, I think, if Rem were just a senior or something. The story needs to be the story.

4) What is the most surprising thing we would find in your purse?

I've always got a baggie full of matchbox cars for my youngest son to play with--and I carry Tic-Tacs because I'm a coffee drinker but I like to have minty breath. I guess I'm not all that surprising, purse-wise.

5) What YA novel do you think would make a fun musical and who would you cast in the lead roles?

This is a more of middle grade, but I think Selling Hope by Kristen O'Donnell Tubb would make a fantastic musical with its vaudeville references and the big splashy party at the end. In the interest of strong singers with younger looks, I'd cast Miranda Cosgrove as Hopeful and Zac Efron as a young Buster Keaton, though maybe he's a bit too old. Of course, there's always the Biebs. Definitely a modern-day vaudeville type!

She still wears the dress she wore on the day of her brutal murder in 1958: once white, now stained red and dripping with blood. Since her death, Anna has killed any and every person who has dared to step into the deserted Victorian she used to call home.
But she, for whatever reason, spares Cas's life.

ANNA DRESSED IN BLOOD dives right into the action and rarely slows down. The fight scenes are exciting, and Kendare Blake doesn't hold back on the gory details - not over-the-top but just enough to give you a terrific visual.

Male protagonists are always a nice change of pace and Cas is a great guy. Hardworking ghost hunter, loving son, and loyal friend. A bit tortured because of his dad's brutal death. Cas' mom is a witch that helps with his work and tries to not be overly protective, but it's tough line to walk. How delightfully refreshing to see a healthy, loving, and authentic parent/child rapport.

My biggest surprise was that I adored Anna. Yes, she's a nasty killer but she's a...complicated ghost. I couldn't wait to uncover the mystery surrounding her death - shocking and horrible stuff, by the way - and it was brilliant how she became a sympathetic and beloved character despite her homicidal tendencies. She's somehow both villain and savior.

The plot hums along, tension mounts and mysteries unfold with plenty of twists and surprising turns. It's horror with a bit of love story, intriguing characters, and nasty bad guys coming out of nowhere to wreak havoc.

There's enough language and violence to suggest that it might be best for older teens. Despite the graphic nature, I wasn't overly creeped out - or grossed out, for that matter - but I was definitely entertained. We'll call it horror-light. Fans of the TV show, Supernatural, will love this excellent ghost story!

1- When you first started writing the Soul Screamers series, did you realize Tod would become such a huge fan favorite? What do you think makes him so appealing?
I didn’t really give it much thought, at first. I knew he was one of my favorites, though. I think it’s his sense of humor that makes him a fan favorite. He gets the most interview requests of any character I’ve ever written. I think people just want to hear what he’ll say next.

Although…he’s kinda hot too, and that never hurts. ;)

2- What kind of mystery would throw together Kaylee from SOUL SCREAMERS and Faythe from SHIFTERS and how would they get along?

Well, they live in completely different worlds, so they’d never meet. But if those worlds were to collide… I’m thinking that Kaylee and crew might help save the life of a werecat in Faythe’s pride, and their fates would be tangled for at least the length of the book. But they’d both be in for a shock. Kaylee’s world isn’t as physically violent as Faythe’s, and she couldn’t hold her own in a fight for very long. But Faythe’s never seen anything like the Netherworld and hellions. They’d need each other to survive.

3- We love your multi-layered females. What qualities do you and your main characters share?

Um…I have a bit of a mouth, and I tend to root for the underdog. I’m also pretty stubborn. I’ll let you draw your own conclusions. ;)

4- You could travel anywhere - real or imagined - and in any time or era, where would you go?
I’ve never been outside of the US, so I’d love to see Europe. Venice and Paris in particular. I’m not picky about time periods. But not during the plague, or any of the conquests. ;)

5- Normandy, 1941, you're lifted by the collar of your shirt by Academy Award Winner Tom Hanks. "You think this is some kind of game? On you're feet soldier, those zombies aren't going to kill themselves!" He hands you a banana. Suddenly a giant screeching seagull with the face of Tom Cruise picks up Tom Hanks and carries him off into the distance. Double suddenly, silence. You look dramatically over your shoulder to see a hoard of Zombie 80's metal roadies staring silently - and dramatically - at you. Weilding only sacks of squirming porcupines along with your banana, a small corkboard, a broken light bulb, and the hat of a Canadian Mountie, how do you survive?
Wake up. And stop eating sausage before bed.

6- Have you ever been to a book signing - at Vromans in Pasadena last year on the Smart Chicks Tour - and signed the chiseled abs of a man...nay, a walking god, reminiscent of the all-mighty Zeus, exuding a masculine yet tender aura encapsulating all those around him in a sensual haze?
Ha! In fact, I did sign such a set of abs—after the boy’s mother gave her approval. I believe I was second in a long line of authors that day. ;)

Okay, maybe that was a bit melodramatic, but I’m sorry, I’m feeling a bit melodramatic at the moment.

Here’s the deal. My name is Brooklyn Pierce, I’m fifteen years old, and I am decisionally challenged. Seriously, I can’t remember the last good decision I made. I can remember plenty of crappy ones though. Including that party I threw when my parents were out of town that accidentally burned down a model home. Yeah, not my finest moment, for sure.

But see, that’s why I started a blog. To enlist readers to make my decisions for me. That’s right. I gave up. Threw in the towel. I let someone else be the one to decide which book I read for English. Or whether or not I accepted an invitation to join the debate team from that cute-in-a-dorky-sort-of-way guy who gave me the Heimlich Maneuver in the cafeteria. (Note to self: Chew the melon before swallowing it.) I even let them decide who I dated!

Well, it turns out there are some things in life you simply can’t choose or have chosen for you—like who you fall in love with. And now everything’s more screwed up than ever.

But don’t take my word for it, read the book and decide for yourself. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll scream in frustration. Or maybe that’s just me. After all, it’s my life.
