Last spring, Nikki Beckett vanished, sucked into an underworld known as the Everneath. Now she’s returned—to her old life, her family, her boyfriend—before she’s banished back to the underworld . . . this time forever. She has six months before the Everneath comes to claim her, six months for good-byes she can’t find the words for, six months to find redemption, if it exists.Nikki longs to spend these precious months forgetting the Everneath and trying to reconnect with her boyfriend, Jack, the person most devastated by her disappearance—and the one person she loves more than anything. But there’s just one problem: Cole, the smoldering immortal who enticed her to the Everneath in the first place, has followed Nikki home. Cole wants to take over the throne in the underworld and is convinced Nikki is the key to making it happen. And he’ll do whatever it takes to bring her back, this time as his queen. As Nikki’s time on the Surface draws to a close and her relationships begin slipping from her grasp, she is forced to make the hardest decision of her life: find a way to cheat fate and remain on the Surface with Jack or return to the Everneath and become Cole’s queen.
Talk about an emotional read!

It starts with Nikki trying to say goodbye to the people she loves and making amends for her mistakes. Broke my heart! And then knowing she's decided to let herself be banished back to the Underworld instead of compromising her morals and taking the easy way out -- I instantly loved her!

Her despair and sadness eventually dragged a bit for me -- you all know I love me some fast paced action, so take that with a grain of salt -- BUT then she starts looking for a way to cheat fate. Everything starts snowballing from there and I couldn't put it down.

The story flashes between present day and the events that led her to follow Cole into Everneath. A thread of dark, cryptic tension rippled throughout the story, and kept me intrigued during the slower parts. And as a mythology nerd, I LOVED the twists on classic lore and the mysteries surrounding it.

Cole's sexy vibe and enigmatic complexity oozes off the pages. I definitely share Nikki's love/hate conflict, and see why she followed him in the first place. Sooooo tempting.

Jack is equally devastating and so very real. True blue, committed, adoring. *Sigh* There should be one of him wandering the halls of every high school for all the girls to pine for.

I wouldn't say there's a love triangle exactly, and that gives Everneath a big plus in my book. Nikki loves Jack while she's only ever needed Cole -- for information, survival, etc. And both love interests reflect her feelings. Jack actually cares for Nikki. Cole simply needs Nikki and he'd be stupid if he didn't use that sex appeal to win her over.

The ending left me near tears and frantically awaiting the next installment.

All in all, a really good read. More intensely emotional and gut wrenching than paranormal action/adventure, but worthy entertainment.

And this remains one of my all-time favorite covers. Why can't I look like that every time I step out of the house? I'll just have to get a fog machine.

I absolutely adored Jack and I loved how the romance was one of falling back in love. I thought it made it stronger and richer. I was nearly in tears in the end too and I hope that Nikki is going to be as strong as Jack in the next book.

Thanks for the warning. I'll wait for the sequel to come out before I read this book. But you did sell me on it. :D

I totally cried here - I loved the emotions in the book. But this was also why I had a hard time connecting with the "after" Niki..
I loved Cole - gosh, he's awesome and sexy!

I know! I either need a fog machine or a wind machine. Probably fog... it will cover up what I want to cover, but a wind machine will probably make me look like I have my head stuck out of the window like my dog.... but I digress...

I also loved this book! I really liked the dark aspects. and JACK! Oh wasn't he just the sweetest? *sigh*

I still have my copy unread of course. Now I really want to read it. But I still have Demons too. I have Julie Kagawa's new book to read and haven't touched it. I'm freaking out here! I don't know where to go! *deep breath* Very good review. Looks exactly like my kind of book and I finally understand what's happening in the book. Thank you for that.

I'd like to look like that for one night!! You girls are still young....you'll understand later in life. I'd actually like a place to go to look like that. Maybe Prom for adults?

Any mention of a sexy vibe and I know I must read this. But I feel like I'm starting too many series lately and always waiting for the next book. I think I'll wait until the next book is released before starting Everneath.

I want to read this book so bad. I'm in the mood for an emotional read. I've heard so many really good things about this book.

I only picked this book up after reading multiple assurances about the lack of a love triangle. And Jack was so fabulous-so swoonworthy and hot (at least in my mind). I also agree about the cover-it was what first caught my eye!
