AUTHOR GUEST POST: Brenna Yovanoff's Favorite Scary Flicks + Giveaway

Brenna Yovanoff, author of the fantabulous YA novel, THE REPLACEMENT (Alyssa's glowing review HERE) has been kind enough to guest post today. We're happy to have her 'haunting" us on the Day After Halloween - hope all had fun and thank you Brenna!

Hi, everyone!  In honor of the fact that it's not Halloween (what? sometimes I have trouble being punctual) I'm going to share a selection of my favorite scary movies.  They are as follows:
10) Jacob's Ladder—Yes, it's a little too dreamlike and experimental to qualify as a true horror movie, but how could I neglect the film that inspired the crazy head-shaking demons of Silent Hill? Which is my favorite video game franchise of all time. Answer: I could not.

9) Nightmare on Elm Street—I wanted to see this movie so bad.  And I was not allowed to.  Because I was nine.  But then later, I was 16 and my mom had not actually dictated my movie-watching parameters in years and I remembered that I had really wanted to see this, and then I rented it.  And it was not as good as if I'd gotten around to seeing it when I was 12, which was my prime horror-watching age, but it was pretty good.  Because Freddy Krueger is awesome. So it goes on the list, because if I had seen it when I was 12, I would have thought it was the best movie ever.

8) Event Horizon—Technically science fiction, I know, but I'm not all that fussy.  Also, I can make a decent argument for horror-status on the grounds that: possessed demonic psychic spaceship = pretty darn scary.

7) Pet Sematary— What can I say? I love when dead things come back to life (only for pretend, I promise).  I saw it at the drive-in when it came out and it remains the only movie that has ever compelled my mother to grab me by the head in an attempt to cover my eyes.  And it gets points for being based on the only book that has ever completely and utterly terrified me.

6) The Shining—Jack Nicholson, bleeding elevators, creepy sisters.  Also, addiction-enabling ghost butler. It's a classic.

5) Pan's Labyrinth—Watch the scene with the [spoiler], or the scene where [spoiler, spoiler], or the one with [spoiler, spoiler, tequila] and tell me this movie is not chilling.  Yeah, it's pretty grim.

4) The Ring—I have a profound horror of drowning and there is drowning in this movie.  I also hate talking on the phone, which is in this movie as well.

3) 28 Days Later—Zombies, but not.  Although it doesn't technically satisfy my love of things rising from the dead, it more than satisfies my craving for unsettling social commentary.

2) The Orphanage—How to scare Brenna: Cue ominous ghost children. With matching outfits. And paper bags over their heads. In an Orphanage. By the sea. With a cave. And a secret room. And a garden shed full of bodies. In Spanish.

1) The Exorcist—Perhaps this is only at number one because I was way too young when I watched it.  But I don't think so.  I think it's at number one because it's a legitimately scary film, and also because people, it set. The. Bar.

And those are my quick-and-dirty top ten.  Happy watching!
Huh.  I really thought there would be more zombies on this list . . .

Awesome post! Ugh, The Ring still gives me chills. Something about that creepy girl just freaks me out.

Seriously, I've become too scared of watching anything horror ever since I watched The Exocist. Up till now, I can still remember how the girl's head turn 365 degrees. Yikes.

I haven't see any of these before except The Ring and Pan's Labyrinth. I've never been much of a scary movie person, but I Pan's Labyrinth was definitely a good one!

I LOVE Pan's Labyrinth. For those of you who haven't seen it, I'd HIGHLY recommend it! It's very well done!

I almost picked up The Orphanage the other day at Wal-mart. It was in the $5 bin. Now I'm wishing I had.

And I watched The Exorcist when I was in sixth grade. It scared me so badly that I slept with my lights on for weeks! The worst part about it was that I couldn't tell my parents I was scared, because they had strictly forbidden me not to watch it! I watched it last year for Halloween though, and it didn't scare me at all.

Great selection in movies! Very creepy!

Just wanted to let you know that I am currently reading The Replacement and loving it! :)

Ah! Great choices, but where is IT? That movie terrified me for months after I watched it.

Funny about Nightmare on Elm Street. I wasn't allowed to watch it either. In fact, I've missed out on a lot of the earlier horror movies, like the original Friday the 13th, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and The Omen. Still haven't watched them, but totally have seen the remakes. LOL

Thank Goodness you didn't make Mackie like that creepy, scary kid from Pet Sematary! Although, I'd be willing to bet that those creepy twin sisters from The Shining inspired the Corbett twins. LOL! J/K

I absolutely love horror movies! :D I've wanted to see the exorcist so badly but I love the nightmare on elm's street & pan's labriynth. I keep confusing the ring with another movie because of scary movie 3 so i keep getting too confused to be scared. :P

Whoa, creepy pics! That exorcist one brought back memories of that movie. Eh, so many horror films aren't scary, it sucks really. I did like The Ring though!

Pet Semetary was freaky

Some of those pics really freaked me out! Movies tend to scare me more than books on the same topics -- probably because of the visuals...

I think the only movie I have seen on this list is Pan's Labryinth which scared the fudge nuggets (haha) out of me! That being said, I am too much of a scaredy cat to watch most of the others. :)

oooooooooo yuck! but I say this with a love of true horror! I agree with your #1 and this was a great post!

I forgot about some of those! I LOVE scary movies!!!

I'm a wimp. Can't watch scary/suspense/horror/gore at ALL. I will freaking leave the house if someone has a scary movie on downstairs (okay, so no...but I will turn the music up in my room and hole up with a good book).

Regardless, awesome post! :)
