Movies: The Lightning Thief, From Paris with Love, Shutter Island

Hey Guys,
We went on a recent movie binge in honor of Alyssa's and Gregory's birthdays (Feb 27 and Feb 28). Here are our quickie reviews...

THE LIGHTNING THIEF
It's the 21s
t century, but the gods of Mount Olympus and assorted monsters have walked out of the pages of high school student Percy Jackson's Greek mythology texts and into his life. And they're not happy: Zeus' lightning bolt has been stolen, and Percy is the prime suspect. Even more troubling is the sudden disappearance of Percy's mother. As Percy finds himself caught between angry and battling gods, he and his friends embark on a cross-country adventure to catch the true lightning thief, save Percy's mom, and unravel a mystery more powerful than the gods themselves.

If you're looking for a remake of the book, you'll be disappointed. So much of the storyline is changed, it will make you crazy. But if you can get past the changes in plot and a few cheesy moments, it's a fun flick.

The characters are true to form for the most part. Grover is some crazed ladies man which is off from the book, but Percy, Annabeth (other than she's brunette, not blond), and the rest of the folks all play their parts well.

So if you haven't read the book, go and have a blast. If you've read the book and can think of this as a different adventure with your favorite characters, go and have a blast. If you won't accept the changes from the novels, well... Let us mention a couple of other good ones.

FROM PARIS WITH LOVE
A personal aide to U.S. Ambassador in France, James Reece (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) has an enviable life in Paris and a beautiful French girlfriend, but his real passion is his side job as a low-level operative for the CIA.

All James wants is to become a bona fide agent and see some real action. So when he's offered his first senior-level assignment, he can't believe his good luck until he meets his new partner, special agent Charlie Wax (John Travolta) - a trigger-happy, wisecracking, loose cannon who's been sent to Paris to stop a terrorist attack.

Wax leads James on a white-knuckle shooting spree through the Parisian underworld that has James prayi
ng for his desk job. But when James discovers he's a target of the same crime ring they're trying to bust, he realizes there's no turning back...and that Wax himself might be his only hope for making it through the next forty-eight hours alive.

An absolute rip roaring good time. Think
TAKEN (with Liam Neeson - it has the same director) but with humor. Travolta shows his versatility once again as Wax. He is so much fun but so smart and deadly. This guy gets it done! Rated a well deserved 'R' for language and violence (but no nudity), From Paris With Love, is like the energizer bunny - the action and thrills keep on going and going and going.

SHUTTER ISLAND
It's 1954, and up-and-coming U.S. marshal Teddy Daniels is assigned to investigate the disappearance of a patient from Boston's Shutter Island Ashecliffe Hospital. He's been pushing for an assignment on the island for personal reasons, but before long he wonders whether he hasn't been brought there as part of a twisted plot by hospital doctors whose radical treatments range from unethical to illegal to downright sinister.

Teddy's shrewd investigating skills soon provide a promising lead, but the hospital refuses him access to records he
suspects would break the case wide open. As a hurricane cuts off communication with the mainland, more dangerous criminals "escape" in the confusion, and the puzzling, improbable clues multiply, Teddy begins to doubt everything - his memory, his partner, even his own sanity.

Brilliant. Absolutely brilliant. We see academy award in Leo DiCaprio's future.

We haven't read the book so we can't compare it to the novel and we went in thinking this was a scary horror flick. Not so. It's a psychological suspense thriller of the first order with so many twists and turns that we were picking our jaws off the floor at the end.

Yes, we all knew something was screwy, but we never saw the truth coming. And even when it did, we were all going, "No, no, no. That can't be true!" It's like the
Sixth Sense because at the end you are going back and trying to make all the pieces fit into your new paradigm.

While DiCaprio is phenomenal, the rest of the cast is also fantastic. Ben Kingsley and Mark Ruffalo are stand outs. We all loved it!

Hope you get a chance to enjoy these great flicks!

I've put up reviews of The Lightning Thief and Shutter Island these past two Mondays. I really enjoyed both. While TLF was nothing like the book, I was highly entertained, and Shutter Island had me at the edge of my seat the whole time :)

I still want to read Shutter Island before I see the movie, but not sure if that's going to happen.

I watched Percy Jackson... And i thought it was great! I was thinking of watching From Paris with Love but I was hesitating. It seemed like the same plot different characters.

Thanks for the great reviews and the trailers.

My kids want to see Percy Jackson. I can definitely see similarities with HP in the directorial style which is good news where my kids are concerned.

John Travolta and Johnathan Rhys Meyers is not an obvious combination but I love them both and with Luc Besson involved this is definitely going to be my adrenaline shot of 2010.

The Shutter Island previews give me the creeps every time I see them. I must see this movie. Scorsese and DiCaprio together are just inspired.

Happy belated birthday! :D

I saw Percy Jackson a few days ago and yes I completely agree with your review. As an adaptation it was bad but as a film, I quite enjoyed the adventure.

Plus, one can never go wrong with Sean Bean and Kevin McKidd. ;)

You make me want to see Shutter Island!

Though this week is reserved for Alice in Wonderland. Simply can't wait!

I am glad for your review of The Lightning Thief. I have a student who has read the series at least four or five times. I personally know of once last year and three times this year because he checkted them out each time from my shelves. I will send him to your review because I don't want him disappointed when it comes to the movie. I want him going in with eyes wide open. I am even more determined to watch Shutter Island now that you have reviewed it. I too will be watching Alice in Wonderland, but I will be watching it for a reading challenge.

I watched "The Lightning Thief" last weekend and even though I thought it was somewhat interesting, I was actually expecting more. Perhaps this is the problem when I read the book before watching the film.

I am also anticipating to watch Shutter Island. To be honest, I didn't know that it was adapted from a book as well. The trailer seems amazing!

I didn't like the Lightning Thief. Too different from the book for my taste, and I thought the effects were cheesy.
Shutter Island was amazing!

Seriously - Shutter Island is definitley on my tbr list, and I want to read it before I see the movie. (Maybe I wont' wet my pants if I do that first, right?)
And Lightening Thief. Yes. ASAP.

Happy Birthday both :D

I saw the Lightning Thief this weekend, and since I have not read the books I can say anything, but I'd like to see more. Especially of the gods.

Shutter Island sounds like a must-see! I loved The Sixth Sense so to have another movie with a shocking revelation sounds great.

I definitely have to watch The Lightning Thief and From Paris With Love! :-) Especially because you mentioned Taken with the 2nd - I have that on my stack of DVDs to watch next.

Oh my gosh, Shutter Island shocked me too in the end. I loved the acting too, it was brilliant. FPWL sounds pretty good (Taken w/ humor? I'm so in).

Happy (belated) Birthday to Alyssa & Gregory!

Last Saturday I saw The lightning thief, it wasn't what I expected, It was sooo different from the book I was like "that didn't happened like that" I was expecting more

And this Saturday I'm going to watch Shutter Island,in the trailer looks good, so we'll see how it goes

Even though The Lightning Thief was so different from the book I really liked the movie. I want to see From Paris with Love, I think both John Travolta and Johnathan-Rhys Myers are both great actors. I told my sister I probably wouldn't see Shutter Island so she told me what happened, crazy!!

Zombie Girrrl said...

Shutter Island isn't a horror flick? That's news to me! The preview kinda freaks me out. Okay, it really me out.
I'm cool with the reported changes made to Lightening Thief. Movies aren't suppoed to be books on screen (with the exception of LOTR, that was an amazingly true adaption and I loved it!), it's an entirely different animal. I just hope they didn't paint themselves into a corner by dropping the whole Titans plot. I mean, isn't the 5th book called Titan's Curse? Oh, well. My opinion: If you're left with a hankering for more Titan action, there's always Clash of the Titans! That movie looks so good!
Okay, I'm starting to ramble, so... Zombie Girrrl out! :)

I did not know that the movie came from a book!! The movie was amazing! There was a lot of suspense. I know what I am going to buy soon... the book :)

I saw Percy Jackson and the Oylmpians right after I finished the book and I was disappointed. Other than the fact that the plot is pretty different, I really liked the special effects and the characters were pretty good.

I can't wait to see Shutter Island!

A Life Bound By Books said...

Im really looking forward to seeing each of these movies. Some great actors in From Paris With Love and Shutter Island. I think I'd see just about any movie that has some of those actors in it.

Thanks for the movie reviews!

Ohh I hope Alyssa and Gregory had absolutely AMAZING birthdays!!! Best wishes for a fantastic year ahead =D

I've read the first Percy Jackson book, but I've yet to see the movie. I can't help but me a book purist most of the time (even though I enjoy the Harry Potter movies, part of me always gets frustrated at the changes from the books) - but now armed with a warning, I'll try to put the book aside when I see it so that I'll enjoy it more.

The other movies sound great too, looks like I'm due for a trip to the cinema soon!

Completely forgot to comment here last Saturday, watched Shutter Island that day, and it was amazing, loved it!!!
