No Midnight Sun for Meyer - or Twilight Fans!

I was over at Jenn-ay's blog, Tea Time is My Book Time, reading her Wish List Wednesdays meme.

It got me thinking and I remembered that Stephanie Meyer had promised a book called Midnight Sun that was Twilight from Edward's point of view.

So I put in my comment and then thought, "Gee, I'll go to Meyer's website and see what's up with that," (because in my head I like to sound like a fifties sitcom). Anyway, I got a big unpleasant surprise.

Turns out her first draft of Midnight Sun was leaked to the internet and went viral (no surprise). Someone she trusted that she gave a copy to somehow let it go public. Naturally, Meyer is quite upset, but the worst part for us Twilight fans, is that she has now put the whole project on hold.

Yep, she has stopped working on the book. Indefinitely. She gives an explanation of the situation from her point of view here on her website.

Yeah, I'm bummed. I didn't know anything about it. I think it's terrible that this happened. Love or hate Twilight, this was wrong to do to an author.

In interesting twist, Meyer has put the first draft of Midnight Sun on her website so you can check out the whole 264 pages here.

I haven't read it yet, but I will since she has put it out herself. I'll even give it a review, remembering it's a first draft and manuscripts change dramatically from the first draft.

So what do you guys think? Was it wrong or right? Are you going to read the draft?

  1. Thanks for leaving a comment on the bookbundle. The leak happened about a year ago - and no sign of midnight sun being completed (but i think we all live in hope lol).
The first 264 pages only go to about 1/4 through the story - so your left hanging.
Its terrible to think someone would leak ARC like that! Great blog BTW!

  2. Emily - You're welcome. And thanks for the compliment. Your blog is awesome. Glad I found it!

Thanks for the info. I am so out of the loop. I didn't know a thing about it! I haven't read the draft but now I know I'll be left hanging. More to be bummed about!

  3. Yeah, I heard about this last year. I wasn't really sure if she was going to finish it or not. I am not a huge twilight fan, but I hope for all those fans out there that she will decide to write it. Maybe after the twilight phase runs out she will do it to bring it back...LOL

  4. I've read the unfinished draft and I like it a million times better than Twilight (which I liked). I think it was wrong to leak it, but I'm really disappointed that she's not going to be finishing it any time soon if ever.

  5. I think it was wrong for them to leak the unfinished draft.
But I did read it when she put it up on her website and I thought it was fantastic! It really helped me to understand Edward's character a little more--which is why I'm Team Edward.

I hope S Meyer finishes this project because reading the draft will leave you wanting more!

  6. I read the draft last year, I actualy loved it more then bella's point of view. But It's better that way, because seriously, who sells book from the same story with a different point of view? Sorry if I'm offending anyone but I think it kind of lame and lack of imagination.

Something like Edwards life before meeting Bella could have been more interesting if she wanted to indruce us to Edwards point of view, or even a book about what he did in New Moon while he was away from Bella. IDK...

  7. I remember hearing about this last year. While I understand Stephenie Meyer's anger, disgust and probably a sense of violation, I think she is ultimately punishing her readers by not releasing it.

I am hoping that the unfinished version posted on her website gets so many hits that she will finish the story and publish it.

Great cover, too. Thanks for posting, Alyssa!

  8. Yeah, I heard about this through Shelfari and I've been bummed ever since. Thanks for bring it to everyone's attention. :)

I refuse to read the draft. Twilight is my favorite series but I feel so bad for SM that I wouldn't feel right reading it. Plus, it leaves you hanging halfway through. I heard it cut off just before the meadow scene. :(

  9. I remember this. So sad. I hope she changes her mind.

  10. This is such a bummer. I read the draft quite a while ago and I loved it...Too bad we'll never ever read the rest of Midnight Sun. :(

  11. I read the draft last year when she posted it on her site... though maybe she'll start writing it again when the movies are really going. It's so good - 10x better than Twilight imo.

  13. Alyssa, sorry I took so long to answer your question, How do you get to sign on to be part of an author's blog tour?

To be honest, I'm new to this book tour thing too! lol...I think most of the time an author will announce they want to do a tour and if you hear about it, you contact them to join! But, in some cases, the author might of already built a relationship with you and will ask you to join the tour, that's what happened with me and Sasha from Random Magic. We e-mail each other here and there so it's cool when you keep in contact :) Okay hope I answered your question babe!

Oh and I know what a bummer about Midnight Sun, Meyer hasn't come out with anything in a while, I dunno what she's waiting for!? :)

  14. I'd read the draft couple times last year. And i love it still. I hope she'll finish what she'd started. I'd read somewhere that the Twilight fans had gathered to ask SM to finish Midnight sun.

  15. I'm not going to read it. It's not the whole story, and supposedly, if she can get herself far away from the event, she's going to finish it.
    So I'll just keep hoping!

  16. I've thought about reading it, but I just can't bring myself to do it. I think its totally wrong what happened to her. And I'm sooooooo hoping that she'll come around and finish it.

  17. I was so upset when I first heard about it. I tried really hard not to read the draft, but succumbed after about a month. I thought that was quite impressive really!

  18. It's heart-breaking for an author to have something like this happen, not at least because she probably didn't feel Midnight Sun was ready for everyone to see. Maybe she'll feel better after some time has passed and her fans have encouraged her - we might still get to see things from Edward's point of view :-)

  19. I guess I'm not enough of a Twilight fan to read an unfinished draft of Midnight Sun. I think the Twilight series was pretty good up to Eclipse, but I didn't like Breaking Dawn too much.

  20. Same thing happened to Rowling (a leak) and she took it much more gracefully. Which, of course, didn't improve my view of Mrs. Meyer...

  21. I think she will eventually release it.Maybe when some of the Twilight hype dies down she'll release it to build it back up.We'll get to read it,I don't think Stephenie will disappoint her fans.

  22. I read the draft on her website and truly wish she would finish it. While the scenarios are obviously the same, the change in perspective was great. I would still buy the book, regardless of the leak, and I think all of Twilight's loyal fans out there would too.

  23. I feel it was Stephenie's fault that she released her drafts to people that were untrustworthy. Honestly, it infuriated me that she would do this to her fans. What does she expect if this gets out there? People love her work. It's her fault it got out there in the first place. She shouldn't punish her fans. I still like her books a lot but I do not like Stephenie Meyer anymore. She seems to have a skewed view on things, in my opinion.

  24. It's terrible that Midnight Sun got leaked, but I hope SMeyer finishes it eventually. I read the draft she posted on her website and I loved it. It was a lot more interesting from
Edward's perspective, but I was devastated when there wasn't more to read.

I still have hope that she'll finish. I just hope it's in the near future.
    :D Nikki
