The Sea of Monsters: Percy Jackson and the Olympians Book 2
by Rick Riordan
pub: March 2007
304 pages
Percy Jackson's seventh-grade year has been surprisingly quiet. Not a single monster has set foot on his New York prep-school campus. But when an innocent game of dodgeball among Percy and his classmates turns into a death match against an ugly gang of cannibal giants thing get....well ugly. And the unexpected vi st from his friend Annabeth brings more bad news: the magical border that protect Camp Half-Blood have been poisoned by a mysterious enemy, and unless the cure is found, the only safe place for demigods will be destroyed.
This book was fun, exciting, and action packed but not as good as the first one. Still it's a worthy read, I just can't help comparing it to the first in the series, The Lightning Thief.
It started out with a bang which is a gift Riordan has with his writing, but slowed down through the middle before picking up at the end. I enjoy the characters and was happy to stick around for the ride.
The mythology is always fun and Riordan's ability to mix it into a fantastical tale is brilliant. If you are a fan of the series, like I am, definitely pick it up. You won't be sorry!

I have wanted to try this series but haven't yet. They do sound and look good(I enjoy the art covers instead of some persons face...lol). I'll have to pick them up the next bookstore mayhem trip I go on. Great review!
I need to get this series. Part me is glad that I haven't read it yet. I always enjoy films more when I have no knowledge of the book.
I recently finished The Lightning Thief and I loved it. I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the series.
Great review, Gregory! I haven't read The Lightning Thief yet, but now I want to. And the movie looks like it will be good. :)

Every time I pass by the first of this series at the store it always catches my eye. I'll have to pick it up sometime. Maybe for the middle grade book challenge I'm doing!
Krista - this is a great series. Worth the reading time!
Juju - me too. I hate comparing the movie to the book. The movie is out in Feb so you don't have long to wait!
Crystal - This isn't quite as good as the Lightning Thief but is still a great book. I just finished the third and fourth in the series, so look for my upcoming reviews!
Jessica - The books are great. I was excited to see the movie coming out with some great stars ans special effects!
Ryan - Glad to hear you enjoy them too. I think they are a lot of fun. Check out the movie in Feb!
Lisa - thanks so much. We'll check it out!
Jenny - they'd make perfect picks for a MG challenge. They are geared for this age group. I like them because they are fast reads with lots of action, lightning (pun intended) pace and interesting characters that tie into some fun mythology. Hope you enjoy them!
Just got the Lightning Thief from the library. It's an older edition, I think (before the neat new covers). Riordan certainly has a way of sucking you in right from the beginning.
