The Lightning Thief - Book to Movie Almost Here! Book Added to Giveaway Pile (Giveaway Points Post)

The Percy Jackson series has become one of my favorite. Once I found The Lightning Thief I flew through the rest of the books.

The movie version comes out tomorrow (midnight showing tonight) and while I'm worried about it living up to the book, I'm excited to see it.

From the trailers it's clear that they've made some changes, the most obvious being how much older Percy is but that doesn't have to be a bad thing and I'm hopeful for a great movie. (And Kirthi from Pages and Dreamer reminded me that Annabeth is supposed to be blonde. I know, I know, it's a little thing, but seriously, how hard is it to dye the girl's hair!)

Here's my review of The Lightning Thief and I'll let you know what I think of the film! (Please feel free to link your own review at the bottom of this post.)

Percy Jackson is about to get kicked out of boarding school . . . . again. And that is the least of his problems.

He ends up at a half-blood camp for demi gods where he discovers that he has some family ties to Mount Olympus and is the prime suspect in the theft of Zeus's master lightning bolt.

On his journey to find the bolt and clear his name as well as save his father's reputation, he has to come to terms with dad's abandonment, and his mother's death - something he blames himself for.

Challenges on his quest include trying to decipher the oracle's cryptic advice and staying alive while underworld gods and beasts are attacking, and trying to save what really matters most - friends and family.

With his magic sword, Riptide, Percy takes on gods, does their dirty work, and oh, by the way, has to save the world!

I flew through this book in two days. It's action-packed from the first pages and takes you on a wild ride. Weaving familiar mythology and gods like, Zeus, Poseidon, Hades, Ares and Athena along with creatures like Medusa and the Chimera into the plot adds fun and interest.

I highly recommend this thrill ride! This is the first in a must read series. I loved them all!

The movie stars Logan Lerman as Percy with the big names being Pierce Brosnan and Uma Thurman.

I found this Germany movie poster which I think is much better looking than the US one.

I'll see it this weekend... Fingers crossed!

NOTE: Be sure to check out the post below. The 3rd Hunger Games cover and title is finally revealed!

That German poster is seriously cool. I'm afraid I'll have to wait for this to come out on DVD, the cinema in my town closed down. :(

Nice, quick review!

Great review and I love the poster! I have this series here on audio but have yet to listen to it(looking forward to it!).

I can't wait for this one also. I really liked the HP series better than this series, but it was still a good book. I have Sea Monsters sitting in my TBR pile, and I lent it out and she said it was better than #1 so I'm going to move on soon. Great review, hopefully I'll be seeing it also this weekend.

I'm going to see this Saturday! I loved the first two books and I think I will read the other three really soon! My brother borrowed by first three and bought the last two earlier this week and read them all in like 4 days! We are going to see the movie and dragging our Mom with us, she'll love it too!

I am SO excited for this film! I'm terrified it won't live up to the book, which I just barely read, but I'm definitely going to see it. I'm reading The Sea of Monsters right now...oh, and great review! :)

I watched the movie today (Australia) and I have to say I was disappointed :*( One thing I have to say is that Grover's personality is totally different from the book (this could be seen in the trailer too so I hope I didn't spoil anything). I felt the movie was made for older audiences (than that targeted by the book) with the jokes and 'pop' references. It was an entertaining movie but it is kind of traumatizing my view of the Percy Jackson world as I'm reading the 4th book >.< !

I Like The Review. This Series Of Books Sounds Really Great. The Films Look Amazing Which Has Sparked My Interest In This Series And Reading Your Review Has Amped It Up 10 Fold.

I highly enjoyed this book. I appreciated learning more about the Greek Gods than I knew before, and the adventure that came along with it. I'm excited to read the rest of the series and see the movie!!

I'm reading this book, just started this afternoon. Although Grover does bother me a lot, I'm really loving this book. It has a good sense of humour. And I'm excited about the movie, too :D Logan Lerman really is handsome <3

I haven't read this series, but I heard it's REALLY good. My little brother has read them all xD. The movie looks really interesting; and my oh my is Logan Lerman cuteeee ;)

aprilnichole said...

I've been thinking about checking this series out. I wonder if they will do a series of movies. I guess it will just depend on how this one does. The book does sound good so hopefully it will translate well to the big screen.

Jasmyn said...

One of the great things about turning books into movies, is that those of us who had never heard of this book (like me) saw the movie looked great and rushed out to order the book so I could read it before seeing the movie! Now we only have to hope it lives up to the hype.

Question: How many of us can enjoy a movie based on a book, that changes so much of the story that it is actually a different story?

rem said...

I havent read this serie, but I can't wait for the movie

Lucía said...

I want to watch the movie, I saw the trailer few days ago, and it seems very interesting and funny, we will see ;)

Michelle @ The True Book Addict said...

I haven't read this one yet, but I've heard good things about it. The movie looks good. Not sure if I'll see it now or wait until DVD. Glad you added it to the giveaway!

InABox said...

I like the US poster better. I haven't picked up the books, but since the movie is aimed at a slightly older crowd, I might go check it out.

titania86 said...

The movie looks really good, but kids at my sister's library said it looks a lot different from the book in a bad way. I guess I'll just have to read and find out. The German poster really is awesome!

Katy said...

I'm borderline fan-girling on the movie. I admit I didn't love the book, but I'm so looking forward to the film!

Tynga said...

Is this a good series to read as an adult to, or it's really better as a child/teen?

Blodeuedd said...

Might not read the boooks...ok I will not read the books. But I will definitely watch this movie! ;)

Amanda Leigh said...

I haven't read this book yet, but it sounds really good. They movie looks good as well.

jacabur1 said...

Extra points for giveaway and the book included for a lucky winner how can we go wrong.... You have it right Gregory, the German poster rocks and the US is kind of tired looking in comparison! I will not read the series of books but the movie is high on my to do list when releases in our area of the planet. I love the premise and if read the book the movie would never be as good so for the sake of sheer entertainment on a visual level the movie it is for me and mine!!

Awesome review! A movie tie-in review copy of this arrived yesterday, and I'm really looking forward to reading it! I'm also so looking forward to the movie, the trailer looks brilliant! I'm not sure whether to read the book before or after - I hate being disappointed by films, so I may read it after. Thanks for the review!

Jessica Secret said...

I've yet to read the books, but I really want to. And I can't tell if the movie looks good or bad yet...either way I'm going to see in it a couple of weeks. And you're right, the German poster is MUCH better than the US one. Hope you guys enjoy the movie!

I love the series & I can't wait for the movie also!

Cool, I don't know if I want to see this or not- its quite Harry Potter-ish, which is FAB, but I'm not sure, it doesn't really appeal to me, but I might try reading it :)

Kathy Martin said...

I just read this book too. I think I read it when it first came out but I'm not sure. I wanted to refresh my memory before seeing the movie. I have the rest of the series but haven't had a chance to read any more of them yet.

Misty said...

I finally read this recently on the (very strong) recommendations of a friend. I was not disappointed. I immediately bought the rest of the series. Pretty positive I'm going to reshuffle my schedule so I can go see it this weekend.

elaing8 said...

I admit I never heard of these before I saw the movie trailer :) But the movie does look really good.

Raspberry said...

Definitely want to see it. I wasn't a huge fan of the books, but I did like them. Of course, I think teenage boys like them best, and I'm neither of those. Well done, though, for sure.

misskallie2000 said...

I like the poster.. I have 2 grand daughters, ages 13 and 15 who are avid readers. This sounds like a book they would gobble up. They are into Twilight and others so they will love this one. Should I win I will pass on to them (of course I must read it first to be sure OK.!.???) LOL
I am sure I will be ask to provide movie money.. That's what grandmamas are for..to spoil the girls.

This is definitely one that I can't wait to see (or read)

Oh I love mythology and I'm soo excited to see this movie. I didn't even know it was a book so now I'm thrilled and can't wait to pick the series up!

Elisabeth Marie said...

I might go see this on Valentine's Day. :) Thanks for the review!

Michelle said...

This was such a great book, but I'm kind of afraid of the movie based on the previews. Sure, the quest is great for big action and such, but did the preview have to make that seem like the entire focus of the book?

One of my favorite things about the book was Percy slowly discovering that he's different for a big reason. I'm worried that the movie will underplay that part.

Jill of The O.W.L. said...

I can't wait to see this one! My daughter and I both read the book, so we could see the movie. I have a sneaking feeling that they changed a bunch, so I'm going into with the idea it will be good on it's own - not just for the book.

I do love the german poster better! And I'm worried about the movie living up to the book, but I'm still going to watch it! I think they should have dyed annabeth's hair blond....or she could have worn a wig!

the second movie poster is being used in Australia too.

I heard that this series was a lot like harry potter but based on greek gods.

I like the greek part so i might get around to reading this...someday lol.

Ashley said...

I need to read this book!

ninefly said...

I'm kind of wary about books like these because I'm afraid I won't enjoy it as it is targeted towards a younger audience (than me)...I'm rather picky about writing and character maturity (part of why a lot of YA books just can't hold my attention), and I'm really not sure what to make of this...
maybe the movie will change my mind, I hope it's not a harry potter rehash...

I LOVED this series! Lightning Thief was my favorite of the five.
The movie looks amazing. I'm glad they aged Percy a bit, and I can live with the changes they made such as Annabeth's hair (it actually makes more sense to me since Athena has dark hair) and Zues wearing armor instead of a suit. Have fun at the movie!

Victoria said...

Thanks for adding this! I'm one of those people who HAVE to read the book before I watch the movie, and I WANT to see this so bad! (Though the actor does not look 12 at all, haha)
